Knee replacement surgery

Find out about this type of orthopaedic treatment and what it means for the patients

Do patients go under anaesthetic for the knee replacement procedure?

'On the day of surgery the patient would be seen by myself, make sure they are adequately prepared for surgery and consented. They are then seen by the anaesthetist and a decision will be made on whether to give the patient a general anaesthetic or whether they will have a regional anaesthetic, i.e. they will be numbed from the waist down'
.

What is the average recovery period?

'Once they are in the room they will be seen by the physiotherapist and advised on relevant exercises. Physiotherapy begins on the day of surgery. Patients are expected to be in hospital anything from five to seven days'
.
