Cataracts Surgery

Find out about cataracts treatment and what it means for the patients

What are cataracts?

'One of the most common problems we {Ophthalmologists] face, particularly in older patients, is cataracts. A cataract forms when the natural lense of the eye goes cloudy. This normally occurs as a result of gradual ageing but it can occur much earlier in some patients, particularly if they are diabetic or have used steriod tablets.'

How soon after cataracts surgery can patients resume everyday activites?

'I advise my patients not to swim or to carry out active sports such as tennis for a week or two following the operation. Most other activities such as reading or watching television, and probably driving will be possible within a few days.'
