Knee replacement physiotherapy
'A patient who has had a total knee replacement will typically be in hospital for five days and they
will start physiotherapy pretty much almost immediately after they return from their surgery. A
physiotherapist will visit the patient on the ward and go through exercises and mobilising exercises
as well. Typically the exercises will just be bed based exercises where we will be aiming to start to
get the movement back into the knee joint.'
Planning the treatment
'Most patients after a total knee replacement will have six to twelve weeks of physiotherapy so they
may intially come in once a week for their first three or four weeks and then we will decrease that
down to perhaps once a fortnight for another four to six weeks. The reason being is that they have
an exercise plan they can follow at home.'
